Welcome to my world.
Welcome to my first-ever blog post! I’m so excited to share my work with the world, and I'm glad you’re here with me to experience it all. I can't wait to see where it takes me and you! In this first post, I’ll be sharing about myself: my history with baking, how I got where I am today, the amazing people who taught and inspired me, and where I hope to head with this blog.
A little Bit About Me.
I grew up in Connecticut and relocated to Gainesville where I have been living for over 20 years. New England is still in my bones, but my blood has definitely thinned and I can finally say I'm super (like REALLY super) proud to be a Floridian! I think I started baking around the time I started walking and I've been in love with it ever since. To this day, the best Christmas gift I ever received was when I was 5 and I got my Holly Hobbie Easy Bake Oven. I have loads of memories of being no more than 7 years old, playing make-believe in my family's kitchen, pretending I was Julia Childs (this was WAY before the Food Network) while I narrated to an imaginary audience as I cracked and added eggs to my Betty Crocker cake mix.
When I entered high school and it was time for a part time job (mandatory in my house), I was hired by two amazing women who co-owned a European style bakery. I stayed for years, every day after school and on weekends, even the dreaded 3:00a.m. holiday shifts. That little bakery help me pay my own way through college and more importantly, helped fuel my passion and gave me a solid foundation in the world of baking. It was there that I learned everything from how to proof bread to how to assemble, stack, and decorate intricate wedding cakes.
Fast forward through college, graduate school, and a COMPLETELY different career path in social work. Years went by, life went on, but the cake kept calling me back. In 2009, I began a cottage industry business but I quickly realized I needed bigger, better, more. This wasn't going to be a part time gig, operating with whatever leftover energy I could muster after my "real job" ended each day. So in 2012, I opened the doors to Sugar, Refined. We are a fully licensed, inspected and insured brick & mortar bakery. I probably spend way too much of my time there, but I can honestly say that I love it. What I do is not work, it's pure joy. Each day I am able to create with my hands, use my imagination, play with my food and eat things with zero nutritional value, all in the name of quality control. Each week I see countless faces light up as they see the cake they've ordered be brought to life. I've manifested, people! I'm living my dream.
Why I'm Starting a Blog.
Working in the wedding industry for over a decade, I've noticed that so many couples share the same questions and often the same misunderstandings. I want to share some of my insight and provide some useful information to help simplify the decision making. Because we all know, when you're planning a wedding, the decisions can feel ENDLESS. I'm here to take away some of the overwhelm and replace it with more of the fun!
What can you expect from this blog?
This is my first post, so I won't dive deep into cake here. My plan is to provide in-depth information and actionable tips to guide you through your wedding planning (and specifically cake planning) process. I'll include plenty of do's and don'ts and insider info. Let's face it, chances are you've never planned a wedding before. My goal is to answer questions that you never even thought to ask, and guide you through a journey where you might not know where to start. I'm here to make your planning process, yes, I'm going to say it...a cake walk!
My main focus will be on wedding cakes, but I do plan to include other cake related topics as well. I hope you'll stick around for ALL of it, but feel free to come back when there's something that particularly interests you. And have fun!
Any Final Thoughts before we start?
Now that you've read my fantastic introduction, I hope you're excited and ready to jump in. I can’t wait to start sharing lots of information that I think you'll find really helpful and meaningful on your planning journey. With that in mind, if you have any questions or comments about what you read here, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me through my website, Facebook or Instagram. Or even if you just want to say Hi. I'd love to hear from you.
